How does image-format conversion work?
An image-format converter decodes the visible pixels of a source image and re-encodes them as WebP, JPEG, or PNG. Conversion helps meet browser, application, transparency, or file-size requirements without sending the image to a remote processor.
The Canvas API performs the re-encode locally, using quality 0.92 for lossy output. JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are flattened onto white, and EXIF metadata is not carried across. Repeated lossy conversions reduce quality, and format conversion does not increase the source image's real resolution.
