What does a MAC-address lookup identify?
A MAC-address lookup matches the first three bytes of an address, called the Organizationally Unique Identifier, to the manufacturer assigned that prefix. It helps identify network-interface vendors while reviewing inventories, DHCP tables, packet captures, and unfamiliar devices.
The browser normalizes colon, hyphen, dot, or plain hexadecimal input and compares the prefix with a local curated table of roughly 150 common entries. It is not the complete IEEE registry, and locally administered or randomized addresses deliberately do not identify the hardware maker, so an unknown result is often expected.
